As peer-to-peer (P2P) emerges as a major paradigm for scalable network application design, it is also posing significant new challenges to achieving efficient and fair utilization of Internet network resources. In particular, without the ability to explicitly communicate with network providers, P2P applications may lead to inefficient network resource usage and/or low application performance. In this talk, I will describe a simple, light-weight framework called P4P to allow more effective cooperative traffic control between network applications and network providers. A DCIA working group named P4PWG has been formed to prompt the adoption of the architecture.
Dr. Y. Richard Yang is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at Yale University. His current research interests include computer networks, mobile computing, wireless networking, sensor networks, and network security. He leads the Laboratory of Networked Systems (LANS) at Yale. He has served as a committee member of many conferences, as a panelist of several funding agencies, as an advisor of several industrial and academic organizations, and as a co-chair of IWQoS 2006, ANM 2008, and NetEcon 2008. His recent awards include a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation, a Schlumberger Foundation Award, and a member of EMC Endowed Chair Professor Group at Tsinghua University.
