STIET is a comprehensive program that begins at doctoral matriculation, and provides activities and support until graduation. Our PhD trainees are admitted by and pursue a degree in their home department; our program provides curriculum, research training and a collaborative research community. Funding for this doctoral fellowship is available only to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. The University of Michigan and Wayne State University are committed to a diverse community and strongly encourage applications from women and members of historically underrepresented minority groups. Our program is primarily for doctoral students enrolled in the University of Michigan’s School of Information, Department of Economics and Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and Wayne State University’s Departments of Economics, Computer Science, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, and Information Systems and Manufacturing in the Business School. We will reserve some fellowships for open competition to recruit appropriate students from other departments.

A STIET Fellowship provides:

• Full tuition plus a stipend: $30,000/yr (for '07-'08) for the first two years of graduate study. Graduate assistantships for two to three additional years will generally be available for students in good standing, consistent with the policies of the individual college or school.
• Strong multidisciplinary, cross-school community of scholars within and across UM and WSU through joint and collaborative activities.
• A faculty research mentor.
• Computing and travel funding for use throughout the graduate career.

Requirements:

• Two STIET core courses and three advanced STIET elective courses.
• Attendance at a weekly research seminar and twice-annual day-long workshops.

Some one-year fellowships may be available to 2nd year doctoral students in our participating departments. The STIET Program also provides a summer opportunity for undergraduates and masters students interested in research: the STIET Summer Research Opportunity Program!
